Complete re-utilization of waste concretes–Valorisation pathways and research needs

Global demand for buildings and infrastructure is extremely high as provision of shelter, sanitation healthcare are paramount to safeguard the world's growing population. Concrete a preferred construction material meet this demand, but its production leading overexploitation natural gravel sand, causing an environmental crisis in regions where these materials extracted unsustainably. Waste concrete available globally, particularly with fast growth built environment, those struck by coordinated attacks, earthquakes or severe weather events. has mainly been used producing recycled aggregates; however, full recycling still not practiced. Alternative uses include applications fine aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials, filler, feedstocks clinker production. These technologies face challenges concerning their adoption eco-efficiency. Restricted knowledge operational barriers have also prevented implementation beneficiation complete re-recycling waste concretes, fractions produced during crushing. Despite issues, it recognised that utilization offers unique opportunities supply chain security, reducing resources consumption enabling move towards Circular Economy. Harmonizing current practices treatment by-products generated processing, first step toward policy standards development enable widespread use. This critical discussion addresses opportunities, well facilitation strategies needed progress re-utilization valuable resource creating sustainable future infrastructure.
